School librarian Brianna Morgan is trying to get students excited about reading.

Last month, Morgan and Crystal Howard reached out to English teachers about their favorite books from high school for a library display.

Sophomore English teacher Abigail Soto’s book choice was Slaughterhouse-Five.

She picked that book “because of the author’s style” and with the “weirdness and darkness” of the book, she hopes it “will give students the opportunity to discover their preferences.”

Soto says that she is “a big believer that no one hates reading, we just haven’t found our favorite genre/authors.”

She also “loves the idea” of teachers giving their recommendations because it allows them to share their personalities with students since book choices aren’t “something we can geek out about during class” all the time.

Theater director Missy Burke-Marquart picked the book Good Omens because its two authors are her absolute favorites.

She thinks “sometimes students forget that we’re human beings with lives outside of school,” so a project like this helps to “humanize teachers.”
