Top 5 Grammy categories that were done dirty

We all know and love the Grammy Awards. Once a year we get a final recap of the best songs and artists from the past 12 months. Going from the highest charting songs and albums to some songs nobody knows, the Grammys are bound to give away some awards that don’t make much sense to the public.

5. Record of the Year

Record of the Year is an award that’s given to the best single or one track off an album. Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” was awarded Record of the Year. While the song is great, it doesn’t compare to some of the other songs that were nominated. Harry Styles’ song “As It Was” has been charting for 44 weeks, peaked at number one, and still is sitting at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. “About Damn Time” was only trending for a few weeks while “As It Was” is still a song people enjoy.

4. Best Country Song

Lots of people have a love-hate relationship with country music. While a big group of people swears they strongly dislike country music with a passion, put on the right song and they change their tune. Cody Johnson’s “‘Til You Can’t” won the Grammy for best country song. Honestly, he sounds the same as every country singer and it isn’t anything special. He has good vocals, but other songs could’ve been deserving of this Grammy.

Taylor Swift’s “I Bet You Think About Me” was hidden from the public for over 10 years before it was released on Swift’s album Red (Taylor’s Version). When the original Red album was released in 2012, it won no Grammys. This award could’ve been Swift’s redemption and changed a few minds about country music.

3. Best New Artist

This Grammy is given out to the artist who rose to fame in the last year. Samara Joy is 23 years old and released her debut album on July 9th, 2021. Not many of her songs have reached over 1 million streams compared to previous winners Olivia Rodrigo, Megan thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, and Dua Lipa who were very popular before receiving Best New Artist. One other nominee, Latto, has come out with a few major songs, the biggest one being “Big Energy” with over 200 million streams. This award should have been hers.

2. Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance

Best Pop Duo is a Grammy given out to the best song with two or more people in it. “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Peters was given this Grammy. “Unholy” has been charting for 19 weeks and that’s 19 weeks too long. This song is absolutely terrible and would’ve been better unreleased. Honestly, the song had potential but that all was thrown away. Any of the other four nominations would’ve been a better choice than “Unholy.” Especially “I Like You” by Post Malone and Doja Cat. “I Like You” does not make people want to rip out their AirPods every time it comes on, unlike “Unholy.” It’s overplayed and overrated.

1. Song of the Year.

Song of the year is given to the best single or one track off an album each year. Bonnie Raitt’s “Just Like That” was given the Grammy. This left many people confused, even Raitt herself. While the song isn’t bad, it definitely isn’t Grammy-worthy especially compared to the other nominations.

Freshman Annika Drasgow doesn’t pull any punches: “It’s like kinda trash.”

“All Too Well,” “As It Was,” “Bad Habit,” “Break My Soul,” and “Easy On Me” were all groundbreaking songs loved by the public. Lots of Swifties online were positive “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” was going to win the Grammy and were very disappointed when it did not.

Some people went as far as hating on the song and Raitt online. Even though there were better options, Raitt does not deserve the backlash she is receiving.

That concludes another year of music. What do these artists have planned for the upcoming year? Make sure to tune into the Grammys next year and watch your least favorite artists win some awards.
