Summer break – it’s the time of year that University of Illinois students look forward to. After a few months, they are back on campus and are impacting the Champaign-Urbana community.

“[Due to the U of I students,] I stay away from campus town because I don’t want to deal with the space consumption and people. Especially students who don’t pay attention to traffic,” said Lynn Manning, a teacher at Urbana High School.

“[However,] the students bring new ideas and freshness to Champaign-Urbana.”

Joe Karny, a teacher at King Elementary School, enjoys working with kids of different ethnicities

“Graduate students at the U of I make it possible for me to teach these students and that makes my job enjoyable,” Karny said.

Alex Brozak, a sophomore at UHS, and Dave Coy, a youth pastor at Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, agree that the students contribute volunteer work. This helps the community spend less money hiring workers.

Both Brozak and Coy think students bring more money to businesses that are a big part of the C-U community, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles and Walmart.

The return of U of I students to the C-U community has excited a lot of people, including teachers, youth pastors, and even local students. They bring new ideas, diversity, and make the community a fun place to live.
