Jacob Richmond: Olympic Correspondent Extraordinaire

My name is Jacob Richmond; I am a high school journalist at Urbana High School in Urbana, IL. This year my correspondent partner, Carter Huff, and I are going to be covering the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

I will be covering three sports; they will be the Snowboarding event, the Hockey games, and the Ski Jumping. These are going to be very exciting events and most of which, except hockey, do not get much coverage here in the USA.

Snowboarding is my first event that I will be covering, and it is personally my favorite. There are many different events; the Slopestyle, the Freestyle and the Slalom are the three biggest events. Recently the top USA Olympic Shaun White withdrew himself from the Slopestyle because he was worried about the injury risk for the course and event (this is a brand new Olympic event). Apparently it is a very dangerous course; White will still be competing in other events. With or without White, the snowboarding events will still be very interesting.

Hockey is a very big sport in the U.S. and both the men and women are national teams competing. The men have Patrick Kane on their team, for those who do not know he is on the Chicago Blackhawks, the reigning Stanley Cup championship team. The Blackhawks have 10 players going to 5 different countries. 3 players are going to Canada, 2 are going to Sweden, 2 are going to Slovakia, and 1 is playing for the Czech Republic. This will take these players away from the current Blackhawks season and will surely affect their record greatly.

Ski Jumping is a very exciting event in which people from their respective countries put on skis and they go down a hill and jump off of it and try to get as far as they can. This is different from freestyle skiing, which is when the skiers are in half pipes and try to do tricks. The Men’s nation ski jumping team has not taken home a medal since 1924, so they will be competing with some extra urgency.

Whether it is Snowboard or Men’s Figure skating and most everything in between, make sure you come back to our newspaper (uhsecho.com) to read the latest breaking news on the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.
