Student opinions on new UHS policies

New tardy and attendance procedures have received mixed reactions from Urbana High School  students.

Students are worried these new rules will not help increase attendance, but will actually encourage students to not go to class due to the new lecture hall rule.

“They are actively allowing kids to skip class and sit in a place and do nothing,” says sophomore Kira Buford.

Having one location for passes might end up making students even more late to class.  Senior Rachel Bernstein states, “The place where they have tardy passes is going to be clogged up.”

However, the small changes, like the new one-minute warning bell shown a more positive reaction.

“I didn’t like the warning bell at first. But when I saw students rushing, and actually using the warning, I thought ‘wow it’s actually working’,’” says junior Jael Lugano.

The new rules put into place are much different from what UHS students are used to. With a school year that has been full of change, initial negative responses are normal and maybe even expected.

Come back next week to hear from staff if these new rules are working and near the end of the semester for an update to see if student’s opinions have changed.
