Art club is back and running after the return of Urbana High School art teacher, Sarah Cardiff’s, year-long sabbatical. Students who are interested in art or have a creative side to them can come express themselves by joining Art Club, which will take on many different engaging and fun projects.

Art Club is a great chance for art enthusiasts (not just “talented students”), ninth through twelfth grade to get to know each other in a less structured environment. “With such an enthusiastic group, we can explore some ideas that wouldn’t work in a regular classroom,” said Cardiff. She has been the sponsor of Art Club for the 10 years she has taught at Urbana High School.

“We have many members who have an array of artistic talents and this gives them a chance to share what they know,” Cardiff said.

Silk screen printing, tie dying, edible sculptures, and collages are just a few of the many activities Art Club will be creating this year. Art Club creates opportunities for students who may not have room in their schedules to continue making art.

Junior Andreas Ruiz said, “I love art, but since it doesn’t fit into my schedule, I chose to join Art Club.”
However, Art Club is not just a substitute for an art class. Many students who attend art club are also enrolled in an art class. “I joined art club because it was a good use of my time,” said Senior Top Nasueb, who is currently in his second year of AP Studio Art.

Art club is also free for any students wanting to attend, in order to help students explore mediums they would not have necessarily had the chance to experiment with. The projects change weekly, so if you ever feel the need to express yourself through art, the club meets Thursdays from 3:30-4:30p.m in Cardiff’s room in 1138. Snacks are provided as well as the materials.
